Khalid, Davide, and Jocelyn Attend DHSI 2026

Three students from the lab pursued extra training this year by attending the Digital Humanities Summer Institute, hosted at the University of Montreal.

Khalid and Jocelyn took the Python Fundamentals course, where they learned the basics of the language and explored how Python can be used for data visualization, API querying, and web scraping. Jocelyn applied these skills to the Cædmon Citation project by using Python to query the Internet Archive for old books. Khalid used Web scrapping with Python in connection with his PhD research, where he needs to gather a large number of articles in order to build his corpus.

Davide took the course L’IA décryptée : fondements techniques et enjeux en SHS. Taught entirely in French, the course covered topics ranging from text extraction to machine learning, as well as the theories surrounding these processes. Davide especially appreciated that the course offered a nuanced perspective on AI, emphasizing that AI is not a “magic wand,” but rather a tool with limitations that must be understood and studied in order to be used effectively.
